Baker Mayfield made his preseason debut for the Carolina Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

In one game against the Washington Commandos' defense no. one overall pick racked up 46 yards in 4/7 passes

and converted on 3/3 third-down passes. The only drive he ran on the day ended with a 41-yard field goal.

Mayfield was brought to Charlotte following a deal with the Browns in the offseason. The long-time Cleveland player was in the market for

a move with the team just a few days prior to the acquisition of Deshaun Watson as part of an agreement that was a blockbuster.

Mayfield is battling the incumbent QB1 Sam Darnold for the Panthers QB1 spot in the run-up to the 2022 football season.

Mayfield began the game with the first play of the game. Darnold was the winner on the second drive.

Darnold made the most of the small field and connected with Rashard Higgins for an 8-yard touchdown.

The first drive ended with 16 yards and two-thirds of a pass. He returned for a second game in the 2nd quarter , but was forced to play a three-and-out.

Mayfield and Darnold are both gone for the day. In addition to Phillip Walker under center, the Panthers outscore the Commanders 17-6.
