In a statement that was shared with PEOPLE this past Saturday, a representative of the 37-year-old Olympic gold medalist has confirmed the information.
"Lindsey Vonn's mom, Lindy Anne Lund, passed away on Thursday night, suffering from ALS just one year prior to the date that
she received her diagnosis" it reads in the announcement. "ALS is a debilitating illness and one for which there isn't yet been cured."
The statement also stated that Vonn "was truly thankful to have the opportunity she was able to spend with her following her diagnosis and was beside her at her death.

The athlete also posted on Instagram on Saturday to post an album of pictures as well as an emotional memorial to her mom.
"My beautiful mom Lindy was a victim of her fight in the battle against ALS," she wrote. "She died peacefully while I held her in my arms."
