The Houston Texans released veteran running back Royce Freeman on Wednesday, just a day after he was named to the 53-man roster for the first time.

Freeman was a part of the Texans as well as the Carolina Panthers in 2021. The release of Freeman means that rookie Dameon Pierce 

and the veteran Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale as the sole running backs currently on Houston's roster.

The Texans returned the running back Marlon Mack to the practice squad on Wednesday after cutting him on Tuesday.

Freeman was a first-round choice from the Denver Broncos out of Oregon in the year 2018.

He played in eight games in his rookie season but was unable to earn the role of a key player in Denver.

In his three seasons in the Broncos, Freeman rushed for 1,187 yards and eight touchdowns with 297 carries, 

while adding 69 receptions to get four09 yards, one touchdown, and one. The previous year, he was a part-time player on the field in fifteen

games with both Panthers and Texans and Texans, rushing at least 56 times, gaining 169 yards as well as taking 10 passes to gain 77 yards.
