Whoopi Goldberg’s ‘s breakthrough role came in 1985 when she played Ceclie in The Color Purple, which gained her an Academy Award nomination. Whoopi became the second black woman to win an Oscar for acting, when she won Best Supporting Actress in 1990 for ‘Ghost’. She’s probably best known, though, for her roles in ‘Sister Act’ and ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’. Though she announced in October 2007 that she would be retiring from acting, as she was no longer being sent scripts, she has done several small guest roles in film and on TV. She voiced Ursula in Disney Channel’s ‘Descendants 2’, played NYADA college head Carmen Tibideaux on ‘Glee’, and had supporting roles in the films ‘For Colored Girls’, ‘Nobody’s Fool’, and ‘Furlough’, among others. Whoopi began cohosting ‘The View’ in 2007.
