Joe and Jill Biden were married in June 1977. It was the second marriage for both. Jill had previously been married to Bill Stevenson, but they separated in 1974 and their divorce was finalized the following year. Meanwhile, Bill wed Neilia Hunter in 1966, and they had three kids together before she and their daughter, Naomi, died in a car crash in 1972.
Joe and Jill first met when they were set up on a blind date by Joe’s brother, Frank, in 1975. He proposed several times before she finally accepted, with her wariness due to a reluctance to be in the spotlight amidst Joe’s rising political career. Joe and Jill had a daughter, Ashley, in 1981, and Jill also helped Joe raise Beau and Hunter after their mother’s death.
Jill was the Second Lady of the United States when Joe was Vice President for Barack Obama from 2008 until 2016. She was also prominently by his side during his run for president in 2020.
