From his early comedy roots to his career highs and personal milestones, here’s everything to know about John below.
John was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 26, 1982, to Ellen, a professor at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, and Charles “Chip” Mulaney Jr., a lawyer.
He attended St. Ignatius College Prep before going on to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he graduated in 2004. He has remained connected to the school over the years, including participating in a fundraiser for its improv society in 2019.
John began his career as a writer on Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013, where he helped create some of the show’s most memorable sketches, including the fan-favorite Stefon character with Bill Hader. During his time on the writing staff, he earned multiple Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.
He was originally invited to audition for the show in 2008—alongside comedians like Donald Glover and Ellie Kemper—which ultimately led to his hiring as a writer. After leaving the show, John returned as a host multiple times beginning in 2018 and has since become a frequent guest host, eventually joining SNL’s Five-Timers Club.
