Solange Knowles, born June 24, 1986, is a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, artist and creative director known for her boundary-pushing approach to music and visual art. Though she is the younger sister of Beyoncé, Solange has carved out a celebrated career of her own with projects that blend R&B, soul, performance art and cultural storytelling. She released her debut album, Solo Star, in 2002, followed by Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams in 2008. Her breakthrough album, A Seat at the Table, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2016 and earned her a Grammy Award, while her 2019 follow-up, When I Get Home, further showcased her experimental artistic vision.
Solange has focused much of her attention on multidisciplinary art, performance and cultural projects through her Saint Heron platform. Her work has been featured at major institutions including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Getty Center and the New York City Ballet.
Solange was married to Daniel Smith from 2004 to 2007, and they share a son, Daniel Julez J. Smith Jr. She later married music video director Alan Ferguson in 2014, and the pair announced their separation in 2019.
The Knowles family made headlines in 2014 when surveillance footage surfaced showing Solange confronting brother-in-law Jay-Z in an elevator following the Met Gala. While the family has never publicly revealed exactly what sparked the incident, they later released a joint statement emphasizing that they had moved forward as a family.
